What Is STEM Racing? Inside the F1-Endorsed Competition

Do you love Formula One, from the speed of drivers like George Russell to the excessive amount of engineering behind every car?

If so, STEM Racing might be the perfect competition for you.

No experience? STEM Racing lets you learn, build, and compete. In this blog, we’ll explain the competition and how to get started.

What Is STEM Racing?

At its core, STEM Racing is a team-based competition where groups of 3–6 students design, manufacture, and race miniature Formula One-style cars.

These cars are powered by a compressed CO₂ cartridge, meaning they rely entirely on concepts like drag and aerodynamics rather than traditional fuel or electricity.

However, the competition goes far beyond building the fastest car. Teams are also responsible for:

  • Managing deadlines and workflow

  • Securing sponsorships

  • Marketing their brand

How to Get Started

If you feel like you don’t have the skills yet, don’t worry, since every team starts somewhere.

We even had to learn everything from scratch when we began.

Here’s a simple roadmap to get you started:

  1. Find teammates you want to work with (we recommend 6 members)

  2. Assign roles within your team (Project manager, Lead engineer, etc.)

  3. Create a timeline for your season (1st meeting, 1st car design)

  4. Learn necessary skills along the way (YouTube and online resources help a lot)

  5. Reach out to sponsors to secure funding for your team.

  6. Design your car using CAD.

  7. Test and simulate your design

  8. Refine and redesign

  9. Manufacture your car

  10. Final assembly

  11. Compete

  12. And most importantly, have fun.
